In 1663 the Dutch built the 36 hectacre Fort and it has undergone a recent restoration. A lovely stroll is on top of the massive ramparts at sunset.
Fishing boats at sunrise
Just outside the Fort is a small fishing fleet that leaves twice a day. Of their catch that does not get shipped overseas the fishermen sell on stalls at the side of the road. The image was taken by Dominic Sansoni.

Approx 3 hrs from Colombo by car or 40 mins by helicopter, Galle is becoming the hub for south coast tourism. It boasts an international cricket pitch; a 300 year old Dutch Fort; beaches to dream about; wrecks to dive on; it lies only 20 mins from the surf capital of Hikkaduwa; has Temples surrounded by lush paddy fields and jungle scenery; a rain forest; shops, spas; restaurants; plays host to the Galle Literary Festival and other planned festivals; and has some of the finest villas and boutique hotels of anywhere in Asia.
The major landmark is of course the Dutch Fort which has undergone a largely Dutch Government restoration of the public areas. Within its impressive Ramparts now sits the latest in the exotic stable of Aman resorts as well as several shops, restaurants and cafes.
