The coastal area immediately north of the airport has, not surprisingly due to its location, attracted considerable package holiday tourism. As such these beaches tend to be bordered by large high rise hotels, sea food platters, ice sculptures and fruit baskets covering buffet tables.
But head a little further north where the buses don't go, and you will be rewarded with pristine palm fringed beaches with crystal clear waters where dolphin frolic and whale feed. This is the new area for tourism in Sri Lanka and it is rumored that the Six Senses group have been scouting for a site to plan their latest in luxurious accommodation.
The vegetation along this stretch of coastline is similar to the east coast in that there is less of it than in the south. It is drier up here which, to those not knowing, means that the tan lasts longer. During the sea quietens and lies still. This coastline is not for the surf crowd but is for just about everyone else who wants to escape. If lying on the beach reading that backlog of books becomes a little monotonous then the ancient sites in the cultural triangle are within a day trip.
