Villas in Galle Fort

In 1505 a Portugese fleet bound for the Maldives was blown off course and took shelter in the harbour at dusk. It is said that  on hearing a cock (galo in Portugese) crowing they gave the town its name. In 1663 the Dutch, destroying most of what the Portugese had done, built the Fort largely as it can be seen today. By the time Galle passed into the British hands in 1796 commercial interest was moving to Colombo and Galle began its long sleep.

The Fort is yet another gem on this paradise island and is one of the seven world heritage sites in the country. At 36 hectares, with over 600 residences, several religious sites, shops, restaurants, and businesses not to mention a functioning High Court and Magistrate Court it is one of the largest ‘living’ Forts in the world.
