Thambili House

Details

Thambili House sits right on the ramparts of Galle fort and goes all the way through to the road behind. With stunning views out over the Indian Ocean, it’s the perfect family villa with 3 double beds and 2 single. From the outside the house looks like a tranquil little haven from the quiet buzz of life in the fort, and once you go in you’ll see its deceptively big.

All of the bedrooms are ensuite. Two have private terraces. The Cinnamon suite, on the mezzanine floor is the ideal location for looking out onto the sunset and over the ancient Dutch ramparts and on to the Indian Ocean – it is a view to die for. The bathrooms all boast sparkling terrazzo walls and showers with polished cement floors – huge bath tubs really are the best place to wallow after a day at the beach, shopping or just lying by the pool.

You enter through the gorgeous arched gate into a different world, into the cool welcoming hallway. You carry on through passed the pool table and eventually hit the pool and courtyard – a great spot for the kids to run around and sun bathing is a must!

Cut off from the hustle and bustle of Galle town, the fort is its own microclimate, full of culture and history. Inside the fort there are gorgeous little boutique shops, wonderful opportunities for sunset walks, some of the best restaurants in town, and great spas for pampering yourself – amongst other things. Also available from Thambili house is the chance to visit Gradely estate, a cinnamon plantation where you can have a guided tour, and learn the basics of growing and harvesting cinnamon and rubber. Thambili house provides the perfect opportunity to explore this rare balance of culture and modern life.

We loved our month in Thambili House. We couldn't have found a better place for us and the boys. The house is incredibly easy to live in and luxurious without being fussy. The staff are amazing, warm, helpful and discreet. The food is spot on. A very lovely introduction (for me) to a country we will definitely return to.

I held my wedding ceremony at Thambili House and it was a perfect setting. The house is much larger than the photos suggest and the main bedroom has fabulous sea views. The staff are very helpful and the food is good. It is also far cheaper than booking a hotel. I'd return to Thambili; it's absolutely lovely.

The house is absolutely beautiful; there is ample room for two families. We were greeted by the staff and they had prepared a lovely arrival meal. I can't really fault the experience but if I could provide just two minor comments regarding the Kitchen and Swimming Pool.

1) Kitchen hygiene - I think the kitchen would benefit from a thorough clean every couple of days. We asked Harsham to sterilize the chopping boards (mouldy); work surfaces after our 5th day. I think some general education around hygiene will benefit the team. For example, don't leave unopened bags of cornflakes in the cupboards (ant infestation); or use the same chopping board when cutting up raw chicken/fruit and vegetables etc.

2) Swimming Pool - just ensuring that it is well maintained and clean especially around kids.

Kitchen protocol has been expressed and stressed. It was not up to scratch and we expect better.
Re the pool it was old rather than unclean and we have now undertaken to drain and re lay the finish.
All will be complete by end Oct 2011. Glad to learn that even with these things you were able to enjoy your holiday. Thanks again.
